Explorer Club

Join us each Saturday for an outdoor adventure in the woodlands surrounding the Farm Shop with our Explorer Leader!

Children and explorers will go on a sensory journey, discovering things such as:

  • Sounds in nature

  • Touch and feel of textures in the natural environment

  • Looking for shapes and colours in nature

Each session includes a craft workshop, which might include making models using clay or using feathers and foraged objects to sculpt, draw and paint.

There will always be a campfire to gather around, where explorers might sing or read a story. And there’s always time for the children to enjoy a hot chocolate and a marshmallow, too!

Each explorer will be awarded a certificate at the end of the session to celebrate the completion of a great day out.

Key information

  • Meet at the Farm Shop.

  • 10am-11.30pm.

  • Mixed ages.

All children must be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the club. But don’t worry, there will be time at the start for you to grab a hot drink in the Farm Shop before we head off.
Only participating children require tickets. Hot chocolate and marshmallows for participating children only.

Join us every Saturday, rain or shine, for an outdoor adventure in the Hawarden Estate woodlands with our Chief Explorer, Ffion.

We’ll meet in the courtyard through the Farm Shop at 10am, before heading off together on a woodland journey to the Wildcat Wood. Over 90 minutes, children will immerse themselves in nature - listening, exploring, and discovering all the wonders our beautiful woodland has to offer!

Each session is jam-packed with forest fun, including a craft to take home, plenty of opportunities for bug hunting and den building, as well as time to get messy in the mud kitchen. With plenty of room to run and dance, there are no dull moments at Explorer Club!

We finish off our session by gathering together at the campfire, warming our tummies with some delicious hot chocolate, as well as a campfire treat. And no campfire is complete without some campfire songs!

From bird watching to fire starting - our activities change weekly, you’ll find something suitable for all ages (including grown-ups!) every week.

Wellbeing Day: Rest, Reset, Rebalance with Emma Garland

Friday 8th May
9:45am-2:00pm
Lunch, snacks and unlimited tea and coffee included.

“Time spent outdoors in nature can be a great way to boost the mind and body, as well as the nervous and immune system. Experiencing natural sunlight can also boost your mood and productivity!” - Emma Garland

This wellbeing day is designed to give you space to connect back to yourself, to your body and to create a space for your mind to be a little quieter. We all have busy lives with stresses and worries that eat into our lives and increase pressure and stresses that we often hold in the body.

This is a relaxed, restorative day for you to take much needed time out for yourself with no expectation or knowledge required. We encourage you to go at your own pace and to join in as much or as little as you like.

The day includes a gentle stroll through the gardens of Hawarden Estate, up to the Old Castle for breathwork, followed by a hot drink back at the Conservatory. We’ll roll out our mats, move slowly, mindfully and connect to our body with the breath. We usually finish with a restorative relaxation to rest the body fully. The day finishes with a delicious lunch from Hawarden Estate Farm Shop.

All equipment, food and drink throughout the day is provided. You’re welcome to bring your own yoga mat, if you prefer.

This session is suitable for all levels and experience!

£45 per person

Timings

9:45am: Meet and greet

10am: Gentle stroll to the Old Castle - learn breathing exercises

11:15am: Back to The Conservatory for hot drinks

Bird Watching

Bird Watching

Saturday 16th May
8am - 10am
Your ticket includes a snack from Hawarden Estate Farm Shop, plus tea or filter coffee on arrival.

The grounds are the home of some wonderful bird species such as both the Green and Great Spotted Woodpeckers, Nuthatch, Treecreeper as well as Sparrowhawks, Tawny Owls and Buzzard.

During this morning walk across Hawarden Estate we’ll be looking at how to identify a variety of species that occur on this great estate. We’ll do this both visually as well as learning some of the bird songs and calls we encounter on our walk. This will be a relaxed walk and birdwatch through garden, open countryside and some woodland as we look to encounter a wide array of species.

If you have ever wanted to learn how to identify the commoner species of bird but did not know where to start, or you’re interested in which bird species are on the estate, then this is the event for you!

Nature-Inspired Screen Printing with Gail Bryson

Nature-Inspired Screen Printing with Gail Bryson

Saturday 16th May
10am - 2pm
Your ticket includes lunch from Hawarden Estate Farm Shop, a snack and unlimited tea and coffee.

Design and screen print your own artwork alongside expert designer and printer, Gail Bryson. Gail will take you through the steps of creating your design, talking you through the printing process and finally helping you print your own pieces.

What will you learn?

You will learn about stencilling, screen printing and how to translate your ideas into a design. You will then learn to choose your colour, and to screen print your design. Gail is an expert, so you can also pick her brains throughout the workshop!

About the day in Gail’s words:

“We will start the session with a brief introduction into the process of screen printing, where I will show a few examples and talk about my experience. We’ll take inspiration from the plants and nature around the Walled Garden. Everyone will then create their own design and make paper stencils of their design to use for printing. At the end of the session everyone will print their own beautiful artwork.”

No experience necessary!

£75 PER PERSON

About Gail Bryson

Gail Bryson is a textile, graphic and product designer. She specialises in simple and graphic prints that complement a wide range of home styles.

Trained at Edinburgh College of Art, she developed her design skills at The Conran Shop and The Nest before subsequently becoming co-founder and creative director of Bryson Loxley. Amongst her clients there are John Lewis and Jamie Oliver. She has also collaborated individually with other small independent businesses on a wide range of projects over the years.

Gail is a firm believer that good design will always last the test of time. Her products are designed to last both in design and manufacture, and are mainly all hand-printed and hand-sewn in London. Ultimately, her aim is to create things that can passed down through the generations, like the collection of linen she has inherited from her own family.

Colour also plays a big part in Gail’s work. Combinations are dreamed up from photographs taken on her travels and provide inspiration back in her studio.

Key information

  • Meet at the Farm Shop’s courtyard.

  • 10:00-11:30 am.

  • Mixed ages (2-11 years, younger siblings also welcome!)

A Celebration of Summer Wildlife

Saturday 27th June
10am - 12pm
Your ticket includes a snack from Hawarden Estate Farm Shop, plus tea or filter coffee on arrival.

This is the kind of walk where you set off not knowing what you may discover and come back with an experience of seeing nature in all its glory, at a beautiful time of year, in a stunning setting.

Join us for a pleasant stroll through the grounds of the historic Hawarden Estate to encounter a variety of interesting wild species that call Hawarden home. From birds and insects to plants and mammals, we will seek out some of the wonderful wildlife of the summer months.

On this walk we will see how different species fit into the landscape and the overall ecosystem, from understanding how a single flower species can be host to a variety of insects and fungi, to looking for evidence of what birds have been breeding.

Whilst this walk does not focus on one particular group of wildlife, it allows us to follow nature’s lead; if we find an interesting butterfly we will look at that, if we see some signs of mammals, we will work out what they were, if we discover a new wildflower for the estate then we will appreciate that. We let nature dictate what we discover (with a little help and instruction from your friendly nature guide, David).

£30 PER PERSON

About David Winnard

David Winnard created Discover the Wild whose background in wildlife started when he was 5. David gained first class honours degree in wildlife photography before starting Discover the Wild, where his aim is to share his passion for identifying species and to help people forage safely and sustainable for wild foods.

Wellbeing Day: Move, Breathe & Flow with Emma Garland

Friday 31st July

Late Summer Foraging

Saturday 22nd August
10am - 12pm
Your ticket includes a snack from Hawarden Estate Farm Shop, plus tea or filter coffee on arrival.

The flowers, fruits and fungi of Hawarden Estate.

This is the perfect time of the year to get to grips with the edible, medicinal and poisonous plants found on the estate.

If you are new to foraging, or know a little bit, then this walk will be perfect for you as we discuss the dos and don’ts of foraging (including what the law is) as well as delving into identifying some of the commoner plants and maybe some fungi that are present in the hedgerows and woods.

Expect to be finding fruits like blackberries and apples and nuts like hazelnuts and sweet chestnut, among the huge variety of other plants that have so much folklore behind them (like Mugwort - a favourite of your nature guide, David).

Not only will we learn how to identify these species but also discuss ways of how to preserve them, whether that is drying them or doing something more involved like turning our finds in to liqueurs.

We will forage in some of the wilder parts of the estate as well as look around some of the more formal bits of garden - not for the cultivated plants, but for some of the more interesting ‘weeds’ which often have many uses (just don’t tell the gardeners we are looking at their ‘weeds’!).

You will leave feeling confident to find and pick your own foraged plants from the wild.

£30 PER PERSON

Yoga Workshop: Realign to Reduce Injuries with Emma Garland

Friday 11th September
9:45am-3:00pm
Lunch, snacks and unlimited tea and coffee included.

“Workshops like this can be more explanatory and give you an opportunity to repeat, learn, understand and implement for your own, individual body’s benefit. These key tools and techniques can help you progress in your practice faster.” - Emma Garland

Join us for a day of yoga to learn more about how to move your body better. We all have different body types and over time, unexplained aches and pains can show up in knees, hips, the back, neck and shoulders. Often issues with our knees can impact how tight our hips become over time.

As we age, we develop bad habits in how we move, stretch and even train for strength. Yoga gives us tools to move more mindfully, slowly and deepen our awareness of proper alignment.

This Yoga Workshop will specifically help you realign in your yoga practice. To help you understand how you move your body and how to adjust/modify to make improvements for everyday, as well as other sports/training.

In this workshop you will:

  • Learn how to correct alignment for your body type.

  • Learn how your feet and knees can impact your hips and back and vice versa.

  • Understand the muscles to strengthen as priority.

  • Learn how to introduce strength into foundational postures.

  • Have the opportunity to have your postures checked for safety, taking into account any injuries.

All equipment, food and drink throughout the day is provided. You’re welcome to bring your own yoga mat, if you prefer.

This session is suitable for all levels and experience!

£55 per person

Timings

9:45am: Meet and greet

10am: Guided yoga session to warm up the body and increase awareness

12pm: Break for lunch (on the terrace)

“Time spent outdoors in nature can be a great way to boost the mind and body, as well as the nervous and immune system. Experiencing natural sunlight can also boost your mood and productivity!” - Emma Garland

This wellbeing day is designed to give you space to connect back to yourself, to your body and to create a space for your mind to be a little quieter. We all have busy lives with stresses and worries that eat into our lives and increase pressure and stresses that we often hold in the body.

We’ll roll out our mats, move slowly, mindfully and connect to our body with the breath. We usually finish with a restorative relaxation to rest the body fully. The day finishes with a delicious lunch from Hawarden Estate Farm Shop.

Yoga Workshop: Rebalance your Body Better with Emma Garland

Yoga Workshop: Rebalance your Body Better with Emma Garland

Friday 13th November
9:45am-3:00pm
Lunch, snacks and unlimited tea and coffee included.

“Workshops like this can be more explanatory and give you an opportunity to repeat, learn, understand and implement for your own, individual body’s benefit. These key tools and techniques can help you progress in your practice faster.” - Emma Garland

This Yoga Workshop will specifically help you to understand your body better and prioritise your focus in terms of which muscles to build strength and which to stretch more. This better balance of the body’s muscles creates longevity, better posture and reduces the risk of injuries, as well as unknown aches and pains that show up as we age.

The Workshop will explore some of the traditional yoga postures (whether you’re familiar or not) where we’ll explore variations of each. Adding subtle adjustments to feel much more than we might usually. Here we’ll get a deeper understanding of which muscles we should stretch more and which we should actually strengthen, to allow the opposite muscles to stretch properly.

This workshop session is suitable for everyone, including beginners; with guided instructions to help you switch on some of those smaller, underused muscles within the body and start to ease some of the muscular pain you may experience, particularly around those tighter areas of the body, like neck and shoulders, back, hamstrings, hips and belly.

We will work with the breath and provide a deeper feeling of engagement and resistance within your body to build heat and strength in the body without necessarily moving fast.

1pm: Yoga Workshop

3pm: Reflections & farewells

10am - 12pm
Your ticket includes a snack from Hawarden Estate Farm Shop, plus tea or filter coffee on arrival.

Join local nature expert David Winnard on a guided foraging walk around Hawarden Estate.

This event is an ideal introduction to foraging, but will also be a great session for more experienced foragers, too. David will guide you into how to safely and sustainably forage for some of the commoner species of plants (and maybe some fungi) in the spring. We will be looking at a variety of species, learning about their habits, how to identify them as well as understanding which might be edible, medicinal or even poisonous.

At this time of year, the countryside comes alive with spring flowers and foliage. During the event you will get to grips with some common species like Nettle and Dandelion, but also a range of plants that you may never have used before. You will be able to try some plants (should you wish) - you can literally graze on some wonderful wild plants as we walk through the estate.

Take home some key facts and inspiration to take you forward into an abundant spring and summer.

Jules Goddard, aka The Plucky Pickle, has been fermenting and preserving for over 30 years and has taught well over 1,000 people at her events. After a career in hosting renewable energy conferences and global events for companies such as Informa and Thomson Reuters, Jules turned her passion for fermenting into a small business in Manchester, producing ferments for delis/restaurants and teaching masterclasses to the public and hospitality industry.

Yoga Workshop: Rebalance your Body Better with Emma Garland

Yoga Workshop: Rebalance your Body Better with Emma Garland

Friday 17th April

1pm: Yoga Workshop

3pm: Reflections & farewells

All equipment, food and drink throughout the day is provided.

Spring Foraging

Spring Foraging

Saturday 11th April

He is one of the most respected foragers and naturalists in the North of England and Wales, having worked with and for organisations including the BBC, RSPB, Lancashire Wildlife Trust, City of Trees, Groundwork, Brockholes as well as many local councils, groups and organisations. He also works closely with a number of gin companies helping them use wild plants and fungi in their drinks.

About The Plucky Pickle

Jules Goddard, aka The Plucky Pickle, has been fermenting and preserving for over 30 years and has taught well over 1,000 people at her events. After a career in hosting renewable energy conferences and global events for companies such as Informa and Thomson Reuters, Jules turned her passion for fermenting into a small business in Manchester, producing ferments for delis/restaurants and teaching masterclasses to the public and hospitality industry.

Jules is also CCO of The Fermenters Guild in the UK and Ireland, an association focused on supporting professionals who work with fermentation.

Her inspiration will always be her Italian nonna, whose jars of sour brilliance developed her taste buds from an early age. Her goal is to spread the love for fermented food and drink, demystify fermentation and show you how easy it is to preserve seasonal, local produce and how to use it in your everyday cooking.

Explorer Club 2026
from £0.00

Please note that we do not offer hot chocolate or marshmallows during any taster sessions.

Key information

Wellbeing Day: Rebalance the Nervous System with Emma Garland

Friday 27th March
