The Estate-Grown Asparagus Is Here!
We are delighted to say that earlier this week we began harvesting our delicious Estate-grown asparagus! We may not be the first of the farms to see the tops of these green stems, but we can safely say that the local stuff is always the best, so pop into the Farm Shop and pick up a bunch or two this week.
Traditionally the British asparagus season begins around St George's Day in late April and stretches into July, however a string of chilly nights in North Wales has meant that our asparagus has only just reared it's head. Asparagus are the young shoots of the cultivated lily plant, considered to be one of the delicacies of the vegetable world with a distinct, intense savoury flavour. The young, slender stems of asparagus are known as sprue.
All varieties of asparagus pack a hearty punch of nutrients, with high levels of vitamins A and C, potassium, iron and calcium.
Asparagus is best stored in damp kitchen paper and placed in a perforated plastic or paper bag in the salad drawer of the fridge. You can also store it a glass/jug of cold water in the fridge. And when it comes to cooking we love it with Hollandaise sauce or hot melted butter. Boil it (3-5 mins), steam it (4-5 mins), roast it (15 mins) or grill it (5 mins). We can't get enough!
