Home Grown Food

Pick Your Own

For five months or so during summer and early autumn (June to October), if the weather has been good to us, our orchards and fields are abundant with beautiful fruit. This is when we invite you to come in and pick-your-own: a lovely family activity, and a great value way of buying nutritious fresh fruit. First up, we have anything up to 12,000 strawberry plants to harvest, plus raspberry canes and rows of gooseberries and blackcurrants. Later on, you will find English apples, pears and plums, both for eating and cooking, and of course our famous Hawarden Estate Pumpkins. Pick up a pot or punnet at the Farm Shop, and then come back for weighing. Over the summer we have our barbecue fired up and sizzling with home-made sausages and beefburgers straight from the butchery; we also serve delicious Cheshire Farm ice cream.

Seasonal Growing Calendar

We are a real farm. As such we are subject to the vagaries of the British weather, and our fruit and vegetables are not forced or faked. For example, two years ago, we had a bumper crop of plums for picking in the autumn. Last year, heavy rains and frost damaged the blossom in spring, so the resulting plum harvest was negligible. If you’re in any doubt, do give us a call to check what’s in season and indeed if it has grown as expected. As a preliminary guide, here’s our calendar of what should be in season when, British weather willing:
